2013-10-01 / UK – Launch of the Yogurt Council

London, 30 September 2013

Five of the leading UK yogurt companies – Danone, Emmi, Lactalis Nestlé, Müller and Yoplait - have launched the Yogurt Council, the first ever UK industry body dedicated to promoting yogurt.
The Yogurt Council will be led by its newly appointed Director, Jo Sweetman, a Registered Nutritionist.

2013-09-21 / EU regulation on Generic Descriptors published: a solution for probiotics?
On Friday 20 September, six years after the entry into force of the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation (NHCR), the EU Commission has adopted Regulation (EU) No 907/2013, which sets the rules for applications concerning the use of generic descriptors (denominations). The Regulation was published on Saturday 21 September (
According to the NHCR, generic descriptors are denominations which have traditionally been used to indicate a particularity of a class of foods …which could imply an effect on human health, reason why they need a derogation.

This new Regulation is of particular interest to YLFA, who officially submitted an application for the recognition of the term 'probiotics' as generic descriptors to the European Commission via two Member States in December 2012.

2013-09-19 / New website dedicated to research and insights on the health effects of Yogurt
On Monday 16 September 2013, on the occasion of the 20th International Congress of Nutrition that took place in Granada, Spain, the Yogurt in Nutrition Initiative for a Balanced Diet launched a new website dedicated to sharing research and insights on the health effects of yogurt:

The website aims at serving as the go-to resource for information on yogurt science for professionals. As evidence of the health effects of yogurt consumption continues to grow, international experts with the Yogurt in Nutrition Initiative convened to address new and ongoing research about the potential benefits of the dairy product.
